Research
Research illuminates social issues, providing valuable insights into the challenges we face and how we can address them.
My first study, Black Muslimahs Speak, was a mixed-methods research project exploring the thoughts and experiences of African American Muslim women regarding race and anti-Blackness in Muslim spaces. The findings highlighted their unique challenges and how anti-Blackness manifests in Muslim communities.
My second study, Black Belonging, focused on the sense of belonging among alumni of U.S. Islamic schools and examines anti-Blackness’s impact on their experiences within these institutions.
2024-2025 Plan
In 2024-2025, I plan to launch the following additional studies:
What Parents Want
An exploration of Black parents’ needs and challenges as they seek Islamic educational opportunities for their children.
Black in the MSA
A study looking into the experiences and involvement of Black students in Muslim Student Associations (MSA) across U.S. colleges and universities.
A study examining how Black British Muslims navigate Muslim educational & learning environments, including Islamic schools & madrasahs, and how anti-Blackness affects their access to these spaces.
Black Brits Navigating Muslim Learning Spaces
Through these studies, I aim to continue unpacking the complex dynamics of anti-Blackness in Muslim communities and contribute to creating spaces where all Black Muslims can feel truly seen, heard, and valued.
